FARRUKH DHONDY, Author and scriptwriter, on the performance of his latest movie. What went wrong with The Rising, for which you had written the script? Nothing. It's the reviews that say the film isn't good. Personally, reviews don't matter to me. Reviews would make a difference if there actually is critical appreciation of films. In India, reviews are more about the movie critic showing off.
But even The Daily Mail says The Rising has been reduced to a Bollywood formula. Comment. The Daily Mail article clearly states that The Rising is an anti-British film and, in these times of terrorism, it isn't right to show British governance in India as a cruel deal. The review, in fact, is good. It's only that it says the film has too many songs and too much masala. Had there been no songs, the film's message would have come across more clearly.
A recent book claims Mangal Pandey was an accidental hero. What's your take on this? Rudrangshu Mukherjee states that his book is based on British records of the time. These views are bound to be biased as they are picked up from a British officer's diary. Why don't people read other books wherein various instances prove how Mangal Pandey had a different agenda -- something against the British? Why is plagiarism/piracy the theme of your latest play, Brainchild? This is because people shamelessly copy the stories of others and redo them in the most horrible manner. And then, they chose to call it inspiration. hyderabadtimes@indiatimes.com
